Senator Manchin is currently America’s climate decider-in-chief, with a massive climate conflict of interest as he is closely associated with the fossil fuel industry. West Virginia, the state he represents, is second in coal and seventh in natural gas production among the 50 states. In the current election cycle, Mr. Manchin has received more campaign donations from the oil, coal and gas industries than any other senator, according to data compiled by OpenSecrets, a research organization that tracks political spending. But the conflict of interest is even worse than that: Manchin is a modern-day coal baron. He makes a half a million dollars a year in dividends from millions of dollars of coal company stock he owns. The stock is held in Enersystems, Inc, a company Manchin started in 1988 and later gave to his son, Joseph, to run.
